Every successful person out there has at least one thing in common. They have set and achieved their most important goal in life, to be successful. They decided that is what they wanted to do and started planning the path to get there. Without that important planning step, success would be an unfinished goal instead of something that is enjoyed on a daily basis. Your goals tell where you want to go with your life and the planning determines how you will get there.
Planning your goal is simply a list of things to do that you will have to accomplish in the future to receive the desired result. The length of time that you will need to plan depends on the complexity of the goal you want to achieve. Is it short term or long term? Planning how you are going to reach your goal is never set in stone. You have to remember to be flexible and change when it becomes obviously necessary to continue.
Just like any other task that you do on a regular basis, goal planning should be done in steps. Think of it as making cookies. Your goal is to make them (and be able to eat them) but the process and ingredients for making the cookies are your plan. Each step needs to be thought out and you want to have everything you need to eventually be able to say you accomplished what you wanted. Once the "cookies" are completed, your goal has been reached.
The planning part of goal setting is the most common part that is overlooked in the process. Write your goal down and then write how you plan to get there. Use this as your guide and to keep yourself on track. It doesn't matter how big or small your particular goal is, that piece of paper will help keep you focused and on track.
Visualization is a powerful tool when it comes to completing your goals. Take a few minutes every day to mentally go over what you have accomplished so far. What will it be like when your goals are completed? Imagine in your mind how things will be and see yourself completing each one of the steps that you have created. Visualizing your completed goal will create the motivation you need when things just don't seem to be going in the right direction.
Problems will creep in here and there while you are working on reaching any goal whether it is short or long term. It's important to be flexible and keep going. Never give up and you will reap the benefits of your hard work and perseverance.
